Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1)Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I tried, I really really tried to read this book. But barely a third of the way through and I threw in the towel. There is no way I'm picking it up again because of the poor writing, horrible topic and character portrayal. "Oh, but it gets better!" Bull. I refuse to even try. I'm glad I borrowed it instead of buying it because I'd be horribly depressed I wasted money on this. If I could give it negative stars I would! But I can't! So you survive this time horrible book. You survive this time.

Will My Madness Ever End?!

Well, today I actually went to an open interview at Black Bear.  They're opening a new store here in Motown because the other is doing so well and there was a space available.  I'm not much into doing food work but at this rate anything is better than nada.  So I thought it went well.  I tried to play myself off as awesome (of course we all know I'm just crazy....) and it seemed like he really liked me.  So fingers crossed!

If I'm not hired there the hospital did call me today to set up an interview for next week!  Yay!  Union and health benefits!  But we'll see..... *shifty eyes*

I also got an email back from another job I applied for saying that the job doesn't open till August sooooo..... yeah..... But they'd like to have an interview with me if I'm still interested when the time comes.  Duh!  That one's silk screening.  On glass!  Why the hell wouldn't I want it?

Anyway, after working today in the 90 degree weather and the interview where there was no AC I decided I wanted a treat.  Thought smoothie.  We have fruit in the freezer that I need to use.  I wish I had fresh canned peaches because those were the best, and mix the juice in and yum.....  So I have orange juice to work with. Boo because that is worth 3 points alone for only like 1/4th a cup or something.  Bah.  But I had a crazy idea.  They have crazy tea flavors now,  why not add tea to the fruit?

Welll....... it kinda worked.  I have more of a frozen dish than a smoothie until it melts that is. lol  It's quite good.  You can taste the fruit but smell and taste the tea as well.  It's not that bad really.....  And it's worth nothing!  BWAHAHAHAHAHA!  Nothing I say!  I did add 2 spoonfuls of no cal sweetner but meh.  That counts for nada too.  Now to finish my treat and spam crap.

Book Review - Ready Player One - Ernest Cline

Ready Player OneReady Player One by Ernest Cline
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In a world where the virtual reality is more common place than reality itself, there's another game that's being played. One that's a giant riddle in a realm that's immense and its winner takes all.

Wade's only way out of a world that seems to be slowly dying because of pollution and economic downfall is the OASIS system created by James Halliday. The same James Halliday that hid an Easter Egg (something hidden in the game where clues are given as to where it is) in the system that could make the dreams of the finder come true. Millions of people were searching for it and Wade was one of those who searched for it for five years. Then it happened, he figured out the first clue. Everything changed after that.

I adored this book. It was new and something completely different. I loved the references from all fandoms. Throughout the whole book I was thinking, I know that one and that one and that one! The twists and turns of it all kept me riveted to the story and I just had to know what happened in the end. And I wasn't disappointed.

I would definitely recommend this story to others.

Finally! Happy Days!

I'm Graduating!  I'm finally done!

I just want to thank my family and my fiance who've backed me during this whole deal.  My fiance may not be happy with what I chose but I'll make it up to her at some point!   She's ecstatic that I don't have to take one more class.  She be even happier when I get a job though.  Over the moon if it's even my degree.  I'll make it work.

Review - Veiled by S.B.Niccum

Veiled (Veiled #1)Veiled by S.B. Niccum
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got this story. Interesting concept. One I've never read before so I thought I'd give it a try.

I've never really been one for angels but this was something new. It started out slow, almost boring to me. I had to force myself to finish part of it though. I just wasn't so interested in it as much as some other stories I've had a hand in reading. I must say though I honestly didn't mind the end. The thought of love that strong. Wow.

I did like that the story wasn't a religious book in a sense. Eternals, Angels, Seraphs, and Cherubs. The First and the Second. Interesting concepts but not preachy.

All in all it's interesting. Not very spectacular or worth a five star. But three is good. Three is very good when I just wanted to read it to get through it.

Review - The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb

The Dragon Keeper (Rain Wild Chronicles, #1)The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fascinating is all I can really say. I wasn't into the story at first, but I soon got into it. I enjoyed the characters though they seemed flat to begin with.

I was honestly a bit ashamed of Alise at the beginning because she just giving into what others wanted her to do. She was so very unhappy with everything that she had decided at the beginning. Though toward the end she was starting to gain confidence about herself though I hope in the next book she does something completely different.

I liked Thymara as well. She knew what she wanted and wasn't ashamed of what she was. Though I could see she still was iffy at the end of the story of what was going to happen to her and the others.

I felt kinda bad for the dragon Sintara. They were supposed to be the last of the dragons to come into being and they are. But they are mistakes of time whether it was too much as the water serpents or not enough in the casings before they became Dragons. I didn't feel so bad part of the time because she was kinda cruel and full of herself.

One of the things I could really have done without though, is at the end of the chapters were the missives between towns and bird keepers. I honestly didn't know exactly what the point of the notes were because it just dealt with messenger birds mostly. I dunno.

I did enjoy the book though and by the end I was upset that I didn't have more to read! I can't wait to read the second one to figure out if they ever find the dragon city.

Review - Hellboy: The Storm and the Fury

Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury (Hellboy, #12)Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury by Mike Mignola
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As endings go, this was an epic ending. While some may have thought Hellboy did not possess his charm in this volume, I have to say it's not that it was flat. He had so much weighing on his shoulders that you could almost feel it throughout. When all else fails, go with your gut.

I couldn't put this down. Though I had to take a small break to give my eyes a rest from the horrible pixel rendering of the digital copies I received from Netgalley. But I regret nothing. I do feel a loss at finishing this volume. But the artwork and the story just drew me in.

I admire the artists and can't wait to read what they come up with next.

Omg....... Nooooooooes! R.I.P Hellboy! I know there's more to come but I can't help but have felt so depressed as I finished this one. Unbelievable! And just when he's just thinking of going back to the BPRD.

Review - B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Gods and Monsters

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Gods and Monsters (B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth, #2)B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Gods and Monsters by Mike Mignola
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well blessed be. What can I say? I'm only slightly lost because like a fool I haven't read the one before but heck if I didn't enjoy this one! I believe Abe and Liz are two of my favorite characters. And I was quite pleased with the story lines and the art work. And even though I wasn't sure what had happened before in the previous works, I was about to continue reading through this volume and get a picture of what had happened.

Poor Abe, is all I can say without letting too much go. I must say though, makes me want to get the next one just to know what's going to happen to him! As I said, he's one of my favorite characters and I'd hate that this would happen to him.

And Liz. Well, dang, I would not want to be on her bad side. Her whole story arc in the volume was intense. She doesn't take any crap and knows how to kick butt well enough to keep her head up. Though life isn't on her side, she's done as well for herself as she can while laying low.

Definitely need to pick of a hard copy at some point. And the next one as well! I just can't wait to read and find out what happens next.

Review - Abe Sapien Volume 2

Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest and Others Stories (Abe Sapien, #2)Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest and Others Stories by Mike Mignola
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Unbelievable.... I must say I was excited when I was able to get this on Netgalley. I stopped reading everything else to read this! I must stay I wasn't disappointed.

I was enthralled with all of the stories in this volume and couldn't put it down, at all. Each was engaging and dynamic with the action. Abe's cool demeanor though is refreshing. He is wonderfully logical and though he may lose it every once in a while it's well deserved.

I love the artwork though children creep me out a little and the last story make me shudder. The monsters really weirded me out and honestly that doesn't happen often. I believe I may just have to start purchases all of these because I just want to reread them over and over and get a much better look at the artwork within the volumes.

A must read!

Noooo, I'm not dead

So far this is my final semester of college and I've been hit with senioritis.  I just don't feel like doing a lot.  I've only just started reading again and that's only because the net has been boring me.  I plan on posting at some point my reviews for 3 and 4 of Wool but I have to reread them because it's been so long!  Not cool right?

Fighting with the stupid phone company to get my phone working again.  Never go with Tracfone people.  As soon as I get the money/job I'm getting rid of them because they have the worse customer service ever.

Madness with Dinner!

Well, my madness has finally moved to food. lol My fiance had decided that she was fed up with not feeling good and decided to start a diet of sorts. Well, can't let her go it alone in this so I decided to join in in my own way. Since I'm mostly the cook I need to come up with different meal ideas that are interesting because I can't stand bland meals and neither can she. Well, this week alone she's lost over 5 pounds! Just by eating healthy and working out 4 times a week. I've lost about 4ish myself which is interesting.

Anyway.......  Tonight we had a casserole that used some of my left over stuffs from the fridge. Mostly Chicken. But hey it was awesome! And we're full. A serving is only about 4 points + by weight watchers standards. And I say about 4 because I'm not completely sure about my measurements of the noodles. Anyway.... on with the recipe!

Chicken Casserole

1 chicken breast cooked shredded
around 6 oz of No-Yolk (3 hands full honestly.  it was going to be 2 but I have small hands)
1 cup broccoli
1/2 cup onion cut
1 cup of a rainbow slaw
1 can of a healthy cream of mushroom soup
1 cup of chicken broth
1 tsp of garlic powder
1/2 pepper
5 ritz crackers
5 or 6 cherry tomatoes cut into fourths

Turn the oven to 400 to let it heat up.

Begin cooking noodles as stated on the package.  While noodles are cooking boil water and cook the broccoli till cooked through.

In a large bowl mix the mushroom soup with chicken broth garlic and pepper.  Mix till smooth then add the broccoli, slaw mix, tomatoes, chicken and onion until they're coated.  Add the noodles after they've been cooked fully and drained.  Mix it all together and poor it in a casserole dish.

Crumble the crackers over the dish and put into the oven for about 15 minutes till bubbly.

Serving is around about 2 cups I think.

I served up a fourth of my casserole dish to each of us and with half a cup of applesauce we were both full!  Sooo good!  Next time might try to crumble some bbq chips on top to spice it up.  That was her idea.  Totally a good idea!

Review : Unwind by Neal Shusterman

Unwind (Unwind, #1)Unwind by Neal Shusterman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When children can be 'unwound' after they turn a certain age, the lines of what is right and wrong are blurred. A war changed everything and human life was offered as a token for survival, that we never really die if we're unwound. For those who have been healed with those who have been unwound, they live on within us. Millions of lives are saved but at what cost?

The story caught me from the very being to be honest. There's not too many male characters that I cheer for very often but the first character Conner caught me from the very beginning. Risa was the second. Lev not so much but I still felt for the poor kid. Their stories entwined so drastically I never knew what was actually going to happen next.

The plot line kept me guessing and I love stories like that. It also got me thinking and part of me was a little freaked out at the unwinding. I was curious when I read about it but when the time finally came, I was disturbed and thought at how horrible it actually was. Sure it saves lives but at that cost? And what of the memories of the unwound? I couldn't have it.

All in all, I'd definitely read this story again and any after that!

Review : The Last Dragon by Jane Yolen

The Last DragonThe Last Dragon by Jane Yolen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've read some of Jane Yolen's works and I was quite interested in reading this graphic novel. And the artwork only added to the want as well!

The story line was wonderfully created. Tansy was a character I fell in love with because she was such a dreamer but such a loving character. Her mother may not have had the patience with her but her father felt she could become the next healer of their town. Everything was going well until a beast came to their town and people and animals began disappearing. She was one character that seemed to keep their cool the best when it came to defeating the Dragon that came to feed.

Personally I loved the simple story behind this work. It flowed beautifully and when paired with the art work it left me wanting to look at pages forever. It has such a flowy, art nouveau type style to me that I almost fell in love instantly. I don't think this story would have worked as well with another's art work. Stand alone as a short story and I would have read it reguardless because of the author but the art just did it for me.

A ranty little post......

because I can. So, a little background first off. My partner worked with this family who was looking for a child care giver to help with their child's english, it was their third language. She worked with him for 2-ish year before handing him off to me because she gained a full time job and couldn't take the extra hours. Now, it's been almost fours years since we've worked with him and that's really not what I'm ranting about. What I'm ranting about is today when I worked with him we had a small battle of wills about what work his mother sat out for him. The work was to read one chapter of a really easy chapter book.

The Missing Mummy (A to Z Mysteries, #13)The Missing Mummy by Ron Roy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A cute little mystery book. It held a good bit of suspense for a small book. I'd read it again with another child or read another of the series without hesitation.

View all my reviews

Now, he only had to read one chapter. It was six pages and he fought tooth and nail not to read. That bothered me the most. I love reading. I would read over most anything else in all honesty and here is a child that is trying to refuse to read! What in the world is going on with children today? I know things are going digital but that shouldn't mean you don't want to read. Reading helped me escape a lot of the time because I know I didn't have a lot of toys and what not sometimes to play with when I was eight or whatever. I always had books though. But anymore children don't even seem to be on their grade level with reading. I know english isn't his first or even second language but he's been working with us enough to have a firm hold on it and should want to read if only just because.

I'm really sad that children have become like this though. Parents are getting their children into reading (his are trying really really hard to) and schools seem to not be pushing to try to get kids interested in reading like we used to be.

So, that's my little rant. I hate that children don't have the drive to read and there are some really fantastically good books out there to read too!

Book Review : Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

Inheritance (Inheritance, #4)Inheritance by Christopher Paolini
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received this book as a Christmas and had been anticipating it since I finished the last book. I cracked it open and realized, I had totally forgotten what was in the last book! Bad me. I dove right in anyway.

The first thing I thought was that there was war. I get war, they are in the middle of it. The battles were well executed. I enjoyed the character change as well, but some times it was irksome when in the middle of the battle when the character changed point of view.

But the final battle was brilliant. I never expected it at all. It was a fantastic end to a most hated man. A very fitting end as well. But leading up to it, the trial Eragon faced, was kinda meh. It was just thrown in there kinda randomly to me and I was not very impressed.

And the end seemed quite drawn out to me. Though I am quite happy that it did not just end with a happily ever after. The path to 'what next' after a war was brilliant. The problems, the pressures and the final decisions. Wonderfully done and the very last chapter left so much open for people to wonder.

Now halfway through the story I looked at it and wondered when it was going to end. That probably was the reason why I rated it so low. It was just never ending and I actually found myself slightly bored till the end.

I'd read this again, but only after I've read the rest of the series again. Maybe then I'd be a bit more excited about it.
